Children who read for pleasure at the age of 10 have far higher vocabulary scores by the age of 42.
Researchers at the Institute of Education(IOE)have found that the most crazy childhood readers score far higher on vocabulary tests 30 years later. The new study suggests that children who read for pleasure carry the intellectual(智力的)benefits with them far into adulthood.
“The long-term influence of reading for pleasure on vocabulary that we have identified may be because the frequent childhood readers continued to read throughout their twenties and thirties,”says lead author Professor Alice Sullivan at the IOE.Researchers followed 9,400 British people from the age of 10 up to 42.Their vocabulary was tested using a simple quiz which asked participants to match up words to the most similar meaning.
Those who had regularly read for pleasure at 10 scored 67 percent in the age 42 vocabulary test, while infrequent childhood readers scored only 51 percent.
The IOE study also found that what people chose to read as adults mattered as much as how often they read. The greatest improvements between ages 16 and 42 were made by readers of‘elegant’fictions such as Booker Prize winning novels. And they found that readers of quality newspapers, including online versions, made more progress in vocabulary throughout their lives than those who read tabloids.
In addition, generally speaking, the adult readers who especially read broadsheets(宽幅  印刷品)scored 76 percent on the assessment compared to 57 percent amongst those who didn’t.
21.Why did frequent childhood readers have higher vocabulary scores?
A.Because they are born intelligent.
B.Because they formed the consistent reading habit.
C.Because they were crazy about pleasure.
D.Because they had a comfortable childhood.
22.What may not affect the adult readers’vocabulary scores?
A.The contents of reading.  B.The designs of the page.
C.Versions online or not.   D.The frequency of reading.
23.What does the underlined word“tabloids”mean in the text?
A.Newspapers of low quality.     B.Newspapers of high quality.
C.Elegant fictions.    D.Large vocabulary.
24.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Intelligence has a great influence on vocabulary.
B.Reading materials matter much for children.
C.Broadsheet newspapers are best for boosting vocabulary.
D.Children who read for pleasure have larger vocabulary as adults.

We Chinese are not big huggers.A handshake or a pat on the shoulder is enough to convey our friendship or affection to one another. So when our newly-acquainted Western friends reach out in preparation for a hug, some of us feel awkward. Many questions go through our head.Where should I put my arms? What distance should I maintain? Should our chests touch?
But it isn’t just people from cultures that are conservative in expressing physical contact who find hugging confusing.Hugs can cause discomfort or even distress in people who value their personal space.
In a recent article for The Wall Street Journal,US psychologist Peggy Drexler said that although the US remains a“medium touch”culture,Americans do seem to be hugging more. From politicians to celebrities, hugs are given to friends, strangers and enemies alike, whether they are willing or not;and the public has been quick to pick up the practice.
Public figures know that nothing expresses likeability(亲和力)like a good hug.US First Lady Michelle Obama has put her arms around icy foreign leaders like Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and the Queen of England.Pop superstar Lady Gaga is also a hug enthusiast, telling her fans that“I will always, always, try my very best to wrap my arms around you when I meet you.”
But not all are grateful to be hugged, even by the most influential and famous. To them, any hug is offensive if it’s not sincere.Amanda Hess, writing for US magazine Slate, says public figures should stop imposing hugs on everyone they meet. For them,a hug is rarely a gesture of sincere fellowship, compassion or affection. It’s all part of a show.

B.A hug is a gesture of friendship.
C.A famous person’s hug is usually sincere.
D.An insincere hug is a part of show.

Are you good with money? I learnt to be careful with it during my childhood. My father would give me some pocket money and tell me it should last for a whole week. So,I learnt I had to save some if I didn’t want to run out of cash quickly. No surprise there:my dad was an accountant!
It’s never too early to become money savvy (会理财).That’s what British personal finances expert Martin Lewis thinks. He was part of a successful campaign to include financial education on the school curriculum in England. It will be embedded(植入)in maths and citizenship education. This includes children from 5 to 16 years old.
Lewis says:“We desperately need to break the cycle of financial illiteracy(无知)in the UK—one of the causes of our current economic crisis and a huge contributor to continued misselling epidemics (违规销售).”
Being careful with money pays off.Banks in Britain recently found themselves having to pay a large number of people who were persuaded to spend money and buy insurance policies they didn’t need. Many wasted their money on investments which were not for them.Few have the patience to read the small print.
The British say‘take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves’.It means you have to watch your daily expenses and not just the big purchases in your life such as houses.
Martin Lewis has made millions from his website which advises people to be thrifty(节俭) and refuses any suggestion that he is mean. The expert says in an interview with the English newspaper the Daily Express:“the better you are with your cash, the better your life can be.People think I am telling them to stop spending money but I am simply telling them to spend it wisely.”
