* Students who are missing an eligible mathematics or laboratory science course, who apply for admission to a program that does not require completion of these courses, will be considered for general admission. In this case, an eligible course in subject groups 1 to 4 may be used to substitute the missing course. Students who are missing eligible courses in two subject areas should [email protected].
General Admission Criteria
Minimum grade of "75” in the required subject areas.
Admission to some programs is competitive for a limited number of spaces. A higher admission average and/or supplementary information may be required as part of the faculty-specific admissions.
English Proficiency Tests
English language proficiency may be demonstrated through one of the following standardized tests. Final results must be sent directly by the official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar, Memorial University. The scores outlined below are the minimum required for general undergraduate admission.
INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS)
A minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least a band 6 in reading and writing.
TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL)
A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, or 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing, and not less than 17 in listening and speaking.
CANADIAN ACADEMIC ENGLISH LANGUAGE (CAEL) ASSESSMENT
Minimum band scores between 50 and 60 in each of the four skills tested (reading, writing, listening and speaking), with at least two band scores of 60.
CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)
A minimum of grade “B” in the Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or a minimum grade of “C” in the Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) are required.
PEARSON TEST OF ACADEMIC ENGLISH (PTE ACADEMIC)
A minimum score of 58 in each of the reading, writing, listening and speaking components of the PTE is required.
CANADIAN TEST OF ENGLISH FOR SCHOLARS AND TRAINEES (CanTEST)
Minimum band scores of 4.5 in the listening comprehension and reading comprehension sub-tests and a score of 4 in writing are required on the CanTest.
MICHIGAN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT BATTERY (MELAB)
A minimum score of 85 is required on the MELAB.
