Academic Preparation
All students who apply to Georgia Tech must submit an official high school transcript in English. When evaluating your application for freshman admission, we are very interested in understanding how you stretched and challenged yourself relative to the curriculum that was available at your school. Georgia Tech is looking for students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity and aren’t afraid of a challenge!
You should demonstrate success in the most rigorous curriculum available at your high school, such as:
Advanced Placement
International Baccalaureate
AICE Program
Dual Enrollment
Other Important Information
The GPA we consider is the one taken directly from your high school transcript. We will use a 100 point GPA, if available, and weighted, if available. If not, we’re happy to consider a 4.0 GPA or similar and/or unweighted GPA.
If your high school does not provide a GPA or you have attended multiple high schools, we will recalculate a weighted 4.0 GPA (0.5 points added for AP, IB, Dual Enrollment & AICE courses) using core courses only.
To help us better understand your high school and its curriculum, your counselor will submit a School Report form and/or School Profile with your transcript.
The University System of Georgia requires minimum academic courses of all first time students, though most applicants exceed those in at least one area. USG requirements include:
English - 4 Units
Math - 4 Units
Science - 4 Units
Social Science - 3 Units
Foreign Language - 2 Units
Standardized Tests
All freshman applicants must take the SAT and/or the ACT, as they provide helpful standardized context for your application as compared to our overall applicant pool. Beginning with 2017 freshman applicants, the essay portion of both exams is optional but recommended. Be assured that test scores are only one part of our application review.
English Language Requirements
Georgia Tech is a lively and collaborative atmosphere inside and outside the classroom. It is imperative that our students can communicate fluently in English and have the ability to contribute to classroom discussions. In order to ensure that our applicants have this ability, we encourage those of you who are non-native English speakers to submit the following supplements to your application:
Unscripted Interview with a third-party (we recommend InitialView for this service).
TOEFL or IELTS scores
Please note that this is an optional supplement to your application. It is your choice to submit this portion.
International Transfer
International transfers go through the same application process as all transfer students, regardless of residency.
The transfer application process is a selective, competitive process. Georgia Tech uses a holistic review process to select applicants who will benefit from the campus learning environment and enrich the entire student body. Minimum eligibility requirements to apply are listed below.
Transfer Credit Hours
An eligible transfer applicant is a degree-seeking student who has completed a minimum of thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter credit hours after the date of high school graduation.
Georgia students participating within the Move On When Ready (MOWR) program with thirty-six (36) or more semester credit hours at high school graduation may apply for transfer after completion of fifteen (15) credit hours after high school graduation date.
Course Requirements by Major
Course requirements by major must be complete by the course requirement deadline. It is the student’s responsibility to review the transfer equivalency table and review course requirements by major are transferable to Georgia Tech.
English Proficiency
Non-native speakers of English who seek transfer from a Non-U.S. institution must complete two college-level English Composition courses to satisfy the English Proficiency requirement at Georgia Tech.
English composition courses must be transferable to Georgia Tech as ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102 on the transfer equivalency table. English language proficiency exam scores (ex. TOEFL, IELTS) and English taught abroad as a foreign language do not satisfy the English Proficiency requirement at Georgia Tech.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
The minimum GPA requirement is 3.3 on a 4.0 grade scale for College of Computing and College of Engineering applicants. The minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 on a 4.0 grade scale for College of Design, College of Sciences, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, and Scheller College of Business applicants.
