Instructions for Freshman (First-Year) Students
Please select this option if you are currently enrolled in High School / Secondary School. If you have completed High School/Secondary School but have not started a degree / diploma program please select this option.
Steps
Step 1: Complete your Application
We prefer to receive your application through *The Common Application, for the fastest review of your documents. If you cannot submit your application electronically, please type/clearly print and mail us a paper application. *Please note the Common Application for the 2015/16 year is currently offline. You will be able to apply for the 2016/17 year starting August 1.
Step 2: Submit your Academic Records
We will begin our admission review on the basis of an electronic copy of your academic records, but your admission will only become final once we receive the official transcript/record from each high school (secondary school) you have attended.Important: All transcripts presented in a language other than English must include a translation and grade conversions. The official academic records must be mailed in a separate sealed envelope.
Step 3: Provide Proof of Financial Support
Please follow our instructions online for proving financial support.
Step 4: Provide your Level of English Language Proficiency
If English is not your native language you are required to prove your English language ability through an official copy (photocopy not acceptable) of your TOEFL or IELTS score. The University of Hartford's registration number is 3436.
TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language
Direct Admission to the University of Hartford > > > 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 79 IBT or higher (with no sub score below 15)
Conditional Admission- required to take our English Language Proficiency Examination during the orientation program at the beginning of the academic semester > > > 549 PBT, 212 CBT, or 78 IBT or below
IELTS - The International English Testing System
Direct Admission to the University of Hartford > > > 6.0 and above
Conditional Admission- required to take our English Language Proficiency Examination during the orientation program at the beginning of the academic semester > > > 5.9 and below
Alternative ways to prove English Proficiency
GCSE or GCE English Pass (syllabus A) with grade of A, B or C
A HKCEE English Pass with a grade of (Syllabus A) with a grade of A, B, C or D
An IB English A1 or A2 with grade of 3 or higher
An AP English with a grade of 3 or higher
SAT with scores of Critical Reading 500, Writing 500
Successful completion of level 053 at the University of Hartford / English Language Institute
Successful completion of English Composition at a Regionally accredited College or University in the United States with a grade of B or higher
Successful completion of English Level 112 at ELS
A PTE Academic Test with a score of 52 or higher
Step 5: Complete the Fine and Performing Arts Requirements (Fine & Performing Arts students only)
Please check the following requirements ONLY if you are applying to a degree in the Fine Arts or Music, Theatre, or Dance.
Hartford Art School Portfolio Requirements
Painting, Sculpture, Visual Communication Design, Ceramics, & Illustration
Submit an Art Portfolio with a minimum of 15-20 pieces of your art. This should include examples of your best work from the last 2 years, observational drawing and other approaches that demonstrate your strengths. Please submit work that shows the breadth and depth of your art endeavors and highlights your ideas and conceptual abilities as well as your technique.
The Hartt School Audition Requirements
Music, Theatre, & Dance
Submit the Common Application for the University of Hartford AND complete The Hartt School supplemental application here or through Acceptd.
Please Note: Composition applicants must complete the supplemental application through Acceptd and upload sample scores and recordings at the same time
You must also complete an audition of two or three contrasting works from the standard musical literature, major and minor scales, and technical studies where appropriate. You can be considered for admission via a taped audition. Videocassettes are required for Music Theatre applicants. Please visit the Hartt School Admission page to learn about procedures for completing your application.
Step 6: Submit SAT and ACT, IB and AP Testing (Optional)
These scores are not required for admission but may help to increase the strength of your record. In some cases, students who fall below our admission standard have gained admission as a result of a good score on these exams. Submitting these scores can also strengthen your candidacy for scholarship.
University of Hartford's school codes are: 3436 for the SAT and 0606 for the ACT.
International Baccalaureate: No specific score required for admission. Diploma holders will be offered admission. An applicant's examination results will determine their eligibility for credit. Generally speaking, the higher the score the more credit the student will earn. No credit is awarded for Subsidiary level subjects.
Advanced Placement: Students scoring 3 and above will be considered for credit in their respective subject area.
Step 7: Complete the "Transfer-in" I-20 Request Form / Students who are currently studying in the USA
Complete our "Transfer-in" I-20 Request Form only if: 1) you are transferring from another institution in the U.S. 2) you have received an "acceptance" letter from The University of Hartford; and 3) you have decided that you will attend The University of Hartford. Please complete the “Personal Data” section of this form and have your Designated School Official at your current school (your International Student Adviser or the person who signed your current Form I-20) complete the School Certification Section.
