Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
Tuition & Living Costs
For the academic year 2016-2017, the tuition for full-time study at the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is $39,800. Doctoral candidates receive a full tuition fellowship.
The following estimations of the cost of living in New Haven for the 2016-2017 academic year are made available as a general reference for graduate students and used by the Office of Financial Aid to calculate financial need as required by certain funding sources. The figures include room and board, transportation, personal expenses and academic expenses excluding tuition.
These figures also include the cost of hospitalization. Living expenses for doctoral students may be less insofar as they are eligible to receive a health award that covers the full cost of the single-student hospitalization and specialty coverage in the Yale Health Plan, half the cost of two-person coverage, and the full cost of family coverage.

2015-16 Tuition and Fees and Living Expenses
The standard single student budget below is used in calculating financial aid, including grants and loans. The budget assumes a modest lifestyle for a single student in New Haven. The room and board figure uses the cost of a junior one bedroom apartment on campus. The estimated cost of attendance for the 9 month academic year contains fixed and discretionary expenses as follows:
Fixed Expenses | |
Tuition | $ 23,440 |
Comprehensive Fee | $ 450 |
Health Fee | $ 2,176* |
Board Fee | $ 1,000** |
Total | $ 27,066 |
*The Health fee may be waived if the student can provide proof of insurance. The amount listed is for a single student; rates are available for 2 person and family plans. More information can be found at the Yale Health Pla(link is external)n web site. Visa regulations require international students to retain health insurance.
**The board fee is a mandatory fee for all MAR and MDIV students; it is reduced to $250/semester for students enrolled half time or less.
Discretionary Expenses | |
Rent / Food | $11,204 |
Personal | $ 4,806 |
Books | $ 1,200 |
The fixed expenses are added to the discretionary expenses to determine the estimated cost of attendance for a single student attending Yale Divinity School. Please note that eligibility for federal funds is limited to expenses the individual student incurs for his or her educational program. These funds are not intended to supplement the expenses of other family members.
Additional Fees
Orientation Fee - The orientation fee is now part of the Comprehensive fee but a $35 fee is assessed for spouses/partners who attend orientation.
Commencement Fee - is now part of the comprehensive fee.
School of Drama
Tuition

*Tuition for students in the Technical Internship program and for Special Research Fellows is $14,125. Tuition for D.F.A. candidates in residence is $1,000.
†Costs vary from one department to another. Includes $125 for required personal protective equipment.
A student who has completed the residence requirements but who wishes to remain in New Haven to work on his or her thesis and to use University facilities is charged a residency fee of $1,000 per year. This amount does not include the Yale Health hospitalization fee.
Students may receive a waiver of the Yale Health hospitalization fee from Yale Health upon evidence that they have valid and sufficient alternative hospitalization coverage.
The living expenses estimate is based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics moderate budget standard for this area. Yale School of Drama also reviews the actual budgets each year to verify that the living expense budget used is reasonable. Actual costs may vary depending on the individual. Expenses have risen consistently over the past few years, and it is safe to assume that both tuition and living costs for the 2016–2017 academic year will be higher.
School of Engineering & Applied Science
Financial Aid & Tuition
Doctoral students who are accepted to our program usually receive financial support (tuition and stipend) for their entire period of study, provided their performance is satisfactory.
A unique feature of our doctoral program is support during the first year from University Fellowships; this financial independence gives beginning graduate students the freedom to explore various topics with different faculty members. For the 2014-2015 academic year, the tuition plus stipend amounts to $69,300 (tuition: $37,600, stipend: $31,700). Exceptional students receive financial supplements from the School of Engineering & Applied Science in addition to their University Fellowship.
After their first year, students are usually appointed Assistants in Research, and their tuition support and stipend come from the grants and contracts of their faculty research advisors.

Student Budget & Cost of Attendance
Our financial aid awards for 2016-2017 are based on a budget of tuition and fees plus allowances for living expenses, books, etc. These budgets reflect our estimate of the cost of a moderate style of living in New Haven for the nine-month academic year.
2016-2017 Basic Budget
Tuition | $57,615 |
University Administrative & Activities Fee 1 | $ 2,250 |
Room, Board, & Personal Expenses | $17,000 |
Books | $ 1,100 |
University Hospitalization Coverage* | $ 2,264 |
TOTAL | $80,229 |
Room, Board, and Personal Expenses
This allocation represents a reasonable student expense for housing, utilities, food and other personal expenses. It is the same for all students whether they live on-campus or off-campus.
Travel
An additional allocation will be made to the cost of attendance to account for travel costs from the student's permanent home address (as reported on the Need Access and/or FAFSA) to New Haven based on a universal assessment of average travel costs on a state by state or by country basis.
Health Services Coverage
Mandatory fees include membership in the Yale Health Plan (YHP), a comprehensive pre-paid group practice plan. In addition, students who are not enrolled in a hospitalization plan must obtain hospitalization coverage either through the University or another source. For 2016-2017, Yale Health Plan membership fees are set at $2,264 for single students, $8,422 for two party coverage and $14,130 for family coverage. The cost of single student coverage is automatically added to the basic budget for all students. If a student obtains outside insurance and waives this coverage, this expense will be removed from the student’s bill and the student’s financial aid award. If a student has dependents and will be enrolling in the two-person or family coverage plan, a Budget Revision form (with documentation of enrollment) must be completed and submitted to the Financial Aid Office for a budget adjustment (available at our website in the ‘Forms’ section for download). Additional financial aid for this expense is available in the form of a student loan.
Children
For students with dependent children, an allowance of $5,000 for each child is added to the applicable budget.
Extraordinary Expenses
Adjustments to the basic budget may be made in the event of extraordinary expenses and special needs (e.g., extraordinary medical expenses). Additional financial assistance resulting from such an adjustment will be available in the form of a loan. Students are encouraged to discuss their individual situations with the Financial Aid Office, which is committed to being as responsive and flexible as possible.
Expenses Not Included
Moving expenses, prior debt, credit card debt and costs associated with automobiles will not be considered part of student budgets in determining eligibility for financial aid.
