Dues and Fees
At the moment there are no fees in the state of Thuringia for Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes. However, you have to bear in mind the matriculation fees. All students must pay a certain amount to the Students’ Guild (Studentenwerk), to the Students’ Represantives Council (StuRa) and they have to buy the semester ticket which allows them to use all trains in the state of Thuringia for free (except for the high-speed trains ICE). Altogether, this amounts to 82,40 € for each semester.
Classes that are not directly part of studies must be paid for. This includes preliminary language classes, language classes that are not part of the course of studies, additional classes, coachings, etc. In case a student exceeds the average period of studies by more than 4 semesters, s/he has to pay tuition fees amounting to 500 € per semester. The same regulations apply for international students as for German students.

Student Housing and Food
The TU Ilmenau is a campus university. Most of its academic buildings and all of its dormitories are located on the Ehrenberg campus. The dormitories have been renovated in the past few years, so that students are now accommodated in single and double-bed rooms. The Student Guildguarantees all first term students a room in the dormitories, provided they apply on time. Of course, you may also independently look for a privately rented apartment in Ilmenau and the surrounding area. The dormitory rent in Ilmenau is approximately between 100 and 230 € per bed per month, depending on the type of apartment and how well it is furnished. If you decide for the students´ dorm, you have to pay a deposit of 300 €, which you will get back at the end of your stay. We cannot offer estimates for the cost of private accommodations, because the prices vary widely and are not comparable due to the wide range of conditions. You will receive a housing request form along with your letter of admittance to the TU Ilmenau, which you can return with your registration forms. In this case, you will have a room reserved for you upon your arrival.
The Ilmenau Student's Cafeteria (Mensa) offers at least four different options for lunch on weekdays. It is guaranteed that there will be at least one menu option without pork every day. Furthermore, one meal is also offered for those who enjoy alternative nutrition, and is often a vegetarian dish or contains at least very little meat and is prepared with extra grains and seeds. One meal in the dining hall costs 1,50 € to 2,60 €. All apartments in the students’ dormitories have kitchens which are included in the price of rent.
Health Insurance
A valid health insurance is required in order to study at a German university. As a regular student (not valid for the preparatory college or the restricted admission to the DSH-courses) you can take out a health insurance policy in Germany. Monthly costs amount to approx. 60 € for international students under 30 years of age. If you do not belong to this group, a staff member of the student´s office will support you in finding a health insurance policy with optimal conditions.
