Clark students must be able to read, speak and write English fluently, as well as be able to take notes and understand hour-long lectures. If English is not your native language (even if you are a U.S. citizen), you are required to submit evidence of English proficiency either through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Testing System (IELTS) or the Pearson Test of English (PTE).
In order to be admitted to Clark, applicants must earn a minimum of an 80 on the TOEFL ibT (with no sub-score below 15), a minimum of 6.5 on the IELTS (with no sub-score below 6.0) or a minimum of a 55 on the PTE.
Information on test dates and locations can be obtained by visiting the TOEFL website atwww.toefl.org, IELTS at www.ielts.org or the PTE at www.pearsonpte.com.
Other than test scores, there are a few alternate ways by which proficiency can be established:
-A score of 600 or greater on the critical reading section (CR) of the SAT
-A score of 26 or greater on the English section of the ACT
-Predicted grades of 5 or above in IB Higher Level A1 English Literature (not English B)
-Grades of 'B' and above in AP English Language/Literature and Composition
-Grades of 'B' and above on an English language/literature A level.
If you do not meet our minimum score requirements, but have a strong academic background, you may be granted provisional admission.
Provisional Admittance
Students with a strong academic record who score between 75 and 79 (520-529) on the TOEFL, 6.0 on the IELTS or 50 on the PTE may be offered provisional admission. In this case, you will begin your studies at Clark by taking two undergraduate courses and two courses through Clark's American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) to strengthen your English language skills. CLark's ALCI program provides intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, private tutorial sessions, TOEFL preparation and computer-assisted language learning.
