Leicester is a great place to be a student for many reasons, not least the low cost of living here.
For two years running (2014 and 2015) a survey by HSBC has found that Leicester was the cheapest place for first-year students to live in the UK, with average weekly costs of just under £200 (including a pint of beer each week night and a couple of bottles of wine at the weekend, plus travel, rent and ‘weekly essentials’).
One thing that helps keep costs down is that Leicester is a compact city. Most places are reachable on foot, by bike or by bus. A wide range of facilities and activities take place on or near campus.
How much you spend as a student will, to some extent, be up to you - but what you study, and for how long, will also affect your spending. There is a wide range of student accommodation available to suit every budget, from self-contained flats to shared rooms.
If you are moving away from home to come to Leicester, you will need to consider living costs. Costs will include:
Accommodation
Food
Travel
Societies
Clubs
Books and equipment
Entertainment
There are two main forms of financial support for UK students from the Government that can help you manage your living costs. These are the Maintenance Loan and the Maintenance Grant.
You may also want to consider getting a part-time job to help with meeting your living costs. Unitemps - a recruitment agency run through our Career Development Service - can help you to find part-time work to fit around your studies.
