As a 600-year-old institution, it's no surprise that the University of St Andrews is known across the globe as a world leader in education. Our consistently high rankings in both national and global league tables place us within the top 1% of world universities.
The University of St Andrews recently came fourth in the UK in the Complete University Guide. In both the Sunday Times University Guide 2015 and the 2015 Guardian University Guide, the University of St Andrews is ranked as the third best university in the UK. We were also named Scottish University of the Year in The Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2015, for the second year running.
Our reputation precedes us globally. The 2014 CWTS Leiden Ranking set us as the 39th top university in the world, and the 2014-2015 Times Higher Education World University Rankings recently ranked the University of St Andrews as the 33rd best university in the world for Arts and Humanities.
We also rank highly for our research, with a particularly high percentage of our research in Philosophy being rated at 4* by the RAE, which means it is world-leading in terms of originality, significance, or rigour.
Subject rankings
The University of St Andrews also features in league tables for its excellence in specific subjects. Most subjects offered by the University are often ranked within the UK's top 10, and many fight for the top place in national rankings.
We were ranked first in the UK for Physics, International Relations, Mathematics and Statistics, and Computer Science in the 2015 Guardian University Guide.
We were ranked in the top ten for 18 out of 20 subjects in the 2015 Guardian University Guide.
Employer reputation
Our fantastic reputation throughout the world makes University of St Andrews graduates highly valued by employers. The Sunday Times University Guide ranks us 10th for most competition for places by students.
