If your first language is not English you may be required to produce evidence of your English language proficiency. This is in addition to any academic entry requirements.
The Home Office regulations require all students entering into the UK with a Tier 4 visa to reach a minimum standard in English.
If you need a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK you will need to meet both the Home Office requirements and the specific entry requirements of the course you have applied to.
The Home Office rules state that applicants wishing to study at degree level or above must have achieved a B2 level in each of the four language components.

The Home Office has produced a list of approved English language qualifications.
Applicants who need to improve their English language skills may be able to attend a pre-sessional course during the summer with the Academic Skills Centre.
Minimum requirements
Only English language tests taken up to two years prior to the date that you are due to start your studies are valid for entrance purposes.
Check the requirements for individual courses in the postgraduate prospectus.
Equivalent grades
The table below shows the equivalent grades for the IELTS and PTE Academic, CPE and CAE. If you are studying at degree level or above, provided that you meet the programme specific entry requirement, we are happy to accept results from tests taken before or after 6 April 2015 and IELTS Academic certificates from any IELTS test centre.
